Project: New build office development in Glasgow City Centre
Architect: Hugh Martin Partnership
Contractor: HBG Construction
Products: Fendor FinelineTM system with Pyrolithic glass and intermediate Spandrel panels
The main feature of this project is the full height central atrium to the 5 storey building. The entrance lobby leads into atrium where the building opens out into this spacious, light area. Due to the fire strategy the walls flanking the internal atrium require 30 minutes fire resistance To maximise natural light within the offices the client used extensive areas of fire resistant glass in steel framing. Enhanced acoustics and privacy to the ground floor where part of the design brief.
To maintain the 30 minutes fire resistance and achieve the slender sightlines expressed with the design brief. Fendor selected Fineline with 6mm thick clear Pyrolithic glass. With a 50mm sightline inherent strength is achieved through an appropriate mullion depth to accommodate the imposed barrier loads. A feature panel was created at the floor zone to primarily replicate the external feature but more importantly to form a movement joint within the full height system. Fire resistant glass spandrel panels were used at extra ceiling zone.
Fendor have found that early involvement in a project can ease the design compromises sometimes thought necessary by architects when aesthetic requirements conflict with functional demands
